Arguably one of the Costa Brava’s best-kept secrets, S’Agaro beach was once a hot spot among Hollywood A-listers. Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner – who carried out a torrid affair here – all used to summer on this part of the coast. It’s now a smart Costa Brava village built around a golden arc of sand at the centre of the Camino de Ronda (approx 45 kms total) coastal path. Mooch into the village to dine al fresco at one of several excellent rice and seafood restaurants, or if the kids need to blow off steam, stroll along the camino to more secluded beaches and seaside chiringuitos (beach bars) where games of volley and Frisbee play out among the cold beers and grilled sardines.
